I like an' appreciate what he was tryin' ta do an' I think he got better over the years (the name is still pretty nauseating - he needs ta at least drop the 'Soulchild'). I can't hear it without thinkin' of my senior year of high school; I'd bump it jus' ta lay the mood out for cultivatin' time with some spry young chick-a-dee. Supposedly the ladies were melting for him, but if this was his blueprint for game its pretty weak (an' my game wasn't all that ta begin with so I really suffered under Musiq's tutelage). But when I listen to this album now, I hate ta say it, but its just not really hittin' for me.
The editorial review is kinda dead-on. Even now, when I hear more recent songs of his on the radio I find myself pleasantly surprised, tappin' my toes a lil', snappin' my fingers here an' there, but I jus never could move beyond his first joint. Don't get me wrong. Somehow when I listen ta this album, its like a throwback ta a throwback.
Musically its decent, but not all that distinctive; lyrically, ehhhh; vibes, uggggh. I'll take D'Angelo's two albums any day over this. I can't lie, when 'Just Friends' came out on the Klumps soundtrack back in the day it was my JAM. Yea, I thought I was a MACK.
I'm very disappointed with the seller who would sell this product without even checking it out first to make sure that none of these issues would have came up. This did that all the way through making it impossible to listen until finally I just ejected the cd. When I got the cd I noticed there where scratches and marks on the disk. I played it in my car and after the first couple of songs (which played fined) the disk began to skipped.
Musiq Soulchild has a style that is a welcome change to all the normal bravado and womanizing that is claimed by young, urban Black male entertainers today. She made a point to denounce his songwriting ability in the song, "L' is Gone" by trying to claim it was a poor attempt to flatter a woman -- a "verbal gem," she called it.
His hits, "Girl Next Door", "Just Friends (Sunny)", "Speechless", and "Love" are memorable. What she failed to realize is that he was singing about smoking weed, and therefore, his saying, "all I want to do is make a tuna melt" made total sense by referencing a person who had the "munchies."In fact, much of the CD was well-received by the listening public.
Musiq Soulchild may not be the most gifted crooner of all time, but he is a very credible one in today's market. Chan in the "Editorial Reviews" above, he is a pretty good writer as well.
Do yourself a favor and listen to "Aijuswanaseing," one of the better R&B CD's of its time. He does a pretty good job with the majority of the songs on this first effort.
He is another piece of the neo-soul movement that was on the rise several years ago before becoming a somewhat stagnant sub-genre.Despite the criticism from Sylvia W.
I'd purchase this CD a 2nd and 3rd time just for #16. The production is just as tight. Aimwitue (#16) is such a pure example of a man who has truly experienced God's love, which can't be faked. Unfortuately I didn't pay a lot of attention to Musiq's first CD. Bravo Musiq. Fortunately I know folk's in the "know" and was put on to this very well put together debut. I don't know where I was, what I was into or what, but I missed the opportunity to be in the "know". Musiq's ability to capture a woman's ear and heart with his passion and sincerity filled lyrics nearly blindsided me.
I ordered On My Radio and Juslisten because it got broken LOL. All 5 albums are great and I am very happy with Amazons service. I will be purchasing more cds from you guys and will always buy Musiq's music (smile) This is one of the greatest albums. I feel in love with his music the first time I ever heard him.
